Overview

A former city of Portuguese India, the city of Chaul now remains majorly in ruins. It is located about 111 km away from Mumbai, towards the south and falls under the district of Raigad in Maharashtra. History stands proof to the fact that the Portuguese first settled in Chaul almost 500 years ago, in 1521. 

The city was later destroyed in 1570 under Nizam Shahi Sultan of Ahmednagar. The town of Chaul was later rebuilt in 1613.
