A former city of Portuguese India, the city of Chaul now remains majorly in ruins. It is located about 111 km away from Mumbai, towards the south and falls under the district of Raigad in Maharashtra. History stands proof to the fact that the Portuguese first settled in Chaul almost 500 years ago, in 1521. The city was later destroyed in 1570 under Nizam Shahi Sultan of Ahmednagar. The town of Chaul was later rebuilt in 1613.
These twin towns have seen the rise and fall of numerous dynasties. The town is replete with Portuguese ruins and old churches and synagogues. The Chaulo Kadu Lighthouse is near the Korlai Port and a beauty to watch. The Korlai Fort, accompanying the Chaul fort are two historic spots that take you back in time. A nature lover must check out the Revdanda Beach, which is a scenic spot to look over the horizon and submerge in your idle thoughts. The Datta Mandir is not only a religiously significant place, but is of historical relevance too. The view from atop this place is bewitching.
